Do you remember what happened on November 9, 1989? We look back at a historic 80s moment: the fall of the Berlin Wall. There was a musical touch to this. On New Year’s Eve 1989, a few weeks after the fall of the wall, Knight Rider actor David Hasselhoff seizes the moment to break through as an international singer.
In an aerial platform near the Berlin Wall, he sang his hit Looking For Freedom. It is the English translation of the German hit Auf Der Strasse Nach Süden. Germans thought this song was the anthem of ‘the fall’ and think his performance is fantastic.
The Hoff is even convinced that the fall of the wall is partly due to him. He still thinks then that there should be a picture of him hanging in museum Checkpoint Charlie.
Whether Looking For Freedom is technically the best song of the 80s remains to be seen, but David Hasselhoff did leave a big impression with it. This is due to the clever linking to the historical event.
And finally, what he was wearing that night: a jacket with lights and a scarf with a motif of piano keys. Also so typically 80s.
Of course you can hear The Hoff’s one-day hit at 80s ALIVE. Listen and enjoy the best Power Pop & Rock Hits!
